Rage and Romance : Part 1 Done!
7th February 2014

Today saw the sixth and final recital in the first, monthly, part of our year-long festival entitled Rage and Romance. Rage and Romance is a series of organ recitals exploring the late nineteenth-century German schism known as the War of the Romantics: the radical progressive composers led by Liszt and Reubke, in opposition to the conservative romantics led by Brahms, Schumann and Mendelssohn.

Over the past six months the Director of Music, Lee Dunleavy, and the Travis Organ Fellow, Hilary Punnet, have performed the works of the conservative romantics through the complete organ works of Brahms and Schumann, alongside the six Organ Sonatas of Felix Mendelssohn. The series concluded in climactic style with the Director of Musicís performance of the final BACH Fugue by

Schumann, which increases in speed, volume and intensity over its eight minutes, ending with the colossal full organ sound of the Gallery Organ.

Through Lent the theme continues in our weekly Preaching series, this year entitled Earthquake, Wind and Fire, tracing the message of Elijah in Preaching, Hymns and the singing of extract of Mendelssohnís oratorio Elijah. This series looks forward the performance of the oratorio by the combined choirs and orchestra of All Saints in June 2014.

In June and July our weekly concert series presents six internationally-acclaimed recitalists in performances of the great works of the radical progressive composers Liszt and Reubke. During the series we are delighted to welcome organists from Bath Abbey, Southwell Minster, St Georgeís Chapel Windsor, York Minster, as well as the international concert organist Bruce Neswick, former Director of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, New York.

For more information on the series please visit our dedicated Rage and Romance page.
