Choral Evensong in Cambridge
16th February 2014

The eighteen members of the Girls’ Choir piled excitedly on to a coach this morning and departed for the Chapel of Selwyn College in the University of Cambridge. There, under the direction of the Travis Organ Fellow, Hilary Punnett, they sang a fantastic Evensong to a very receptive and sizeable congregation. The music for this evensong was no mean feat to perform, being very challenging and new to the choir.

Evensong began with Duruflé’s Tota pulchra es, a difficult yet beautiful, unaccompanied work written for three-to-four part women’s voices, which they performed musically and with a good understanding of the supple Gregorian chant rhythms to be found within. They were in their element with Sumsion’s Versicles and Responses and the plainsong Psalmody, particularly in such a warm and enjoyable acoustic. The canticles, the Westminster Service by our old friend Matthew Martin (who was our commissioned composer (Dominus illuminatio mea) in 2005), is a challenging setting which they sang with great panache and professionalism. The Nunc dimittis was a particular highlight, as they achieved a lovely ethereal sound throughout. Finally, their performance of Poulenc’s Litanies à la Vièrge Noir, written for women’s voices in three parts, was the real pinnacle of the service musically. This piece is not only technically very difficult, exploring a wide vocal range and written entirely in French, but has great emotional, religious, and musical depth, all of which came across very successfully. Our girls, aged between nine and seventeen, gave a moving and exceptionally mature interpretation.

We were very warmly welcomed by Selwyn – a splendid Dinner was provided – and very ably accompanied on the organ by William Whitehead, for which many thanks are due. Our own Director of Music was not available because the choir of Boys and Men were, at the same time, singing Mozart’s Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra back in Northampton. We have a busy programme!

Not only did the girls do themselves and All Saints very proud on Sunday, but they kept up their trademark good spirits and hard work through a long rehearsal and hot coach ride - no Girls’ Choir trip would be complete without some homemade chocolate cake and a sing-along on the coach! Well done girls!
