World Première in Windsor
27th July 2010

The senior boys and girls, alongside the choral scholars and lay clerks, today gave the first performance of Dr James MacMillan’s anthem ‘Ave Maria’, their 2009 commission marking the departure of the former Rector of Northampton, The Reverend Canon Simon Godfrey. The service, which also included music by Philip Moore, Bernard Rose and Stanley Vann was attended by a further coach-load of supporters from All Saints, as well as a number of the investors who funded the commission. The choirs were accompanied by former Organ Scholar, Richard Pinel, who had recorded the work with the choir earlier in the month for their latest CD – OMNES SANCTI! – and who is currently Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel. Amongst the many e-mail and letters that followed the performance, one of the anonymous investors in the commission wrote to say:

“What a tremendous sound of fluttering wings was conjured up before the choir began to sing! And then, glorious and inspiring choral music (quite unlike any Ave Maria I have ever heard) which is surely the finest depiction in music of the awe felt by Our Lady at the appearance of the Angel Gabriel. I have no hesitation in saying that in this performance the work of a world-class composer came met its match in England’s finest Parish choir”.

This September the international concert organist and composer David Briggs will be working on the choir’s next commission, a Mass setting for antiphonal choirs and organs, which will be given its first performance on 14 May 2011 at All Saints. More details on this commission and on the choir’s recent recording of its commissions, including MacMillan’s ‘Ave Maria’ – OMNES SANCTI! – will appear on our web-site in due course.
