Schubert Success
26th March 2011

Last night the Choir of Boys and Men gave a concert of music by Franz Schubert in honour of the Feast of the Annunciation, to a large and receptive audience. The concert, taking place on a major Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and on Friday in the season of Lent, rightly included a performance of the “Stabat Mater” and “Ave Maria”. The first half also included Schubert’s “Mass in G”, including the Gloria in excelsis, which may only be sung on one or two days, including this, during the season of Lent. Soloists were taken from the choir, with a particularly spectacular treble solo in the Benedictus. The choir currently numbers 25 boys and 20 men, and their singing gave power in the Mass and serenity in the Ave Maria.

After the interval the Tyburn Quartet who, along with organist Roger Palmer, accompanied the choir, gave a performance also fitting the date: Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as “Death and the Maiden”. Members of the audience commented on the acoustics of All Saints, which are particularly suited to chamber

music, as Yehudi Menuhin pointed out when he gave a solo recital at All Saints in the 1980s.

This is the first in a series of concerts to be given by the choirs. The next is on Sunday 8 May at 6:00pm when the Choir of Girls and Men will give a gala concert marking the twentieth anniversary of the death of the French organist and composer, Jean Langlais. The programme will include two of Langlais’ stirring Masses – “Missa Dona nobis pacem” for Girls’ voices and organ, and the remarkable “Messe solennelle”, featuring the Girls and Men, with separate parts for both the Grand and Choir organs. The concert will also feature two organ works – his ever-popular “Suite Médiévale” and his lesser-known “Three Characteristic Pieces”.

“Missa Dona nobis pacem” will feature on the Girls’ Choir’s forthcoming CD recording – OMNIS GLORIA – which will be launched on Thursday 23 June after the 6:00pm Solemn Choral Mass for Corpus Christi. The disc also includes many French choral rarities, including works by composer including Chaminade, Charpentier, Duruflé, Grovlez, Lalouette, Nivers and de Séverac.
