Girls’ Choir wow at St Alban’s
19th February 2012

This morning the Girls and Men travelled to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban to sing Choral Matins, whilst their own choirs were on tour in Denmark (from where our Boys’ Choir had returned the day before!). Accompanied by the Sub Organist of Bristol Cathedral, David Bednall, the choir sang the Canticles to the setting in E by Gordon Lawson (the Jubilate Deo, having been commissioned for the Girls and Men in 2009), and the Responses to the setting for St David’s Church, Roswell, Georgia, USA, by Dr Craig Phillips, Director of Music at All Saints Beverly Hills,

California, USA. The lessons were of the Transfiguration, and thus the anthem was a setting of the office hymn at Lauds of the Feast of the Transfiguration, O nata lux de lumine, set to music by Morten Lauridsen. We received a good number of e-mails and Facebook posts after the service from members of the congregation, including the following, from Dr Stephen Rowley, who is a regular member of the Matins congregation at St Alban’s:

I just wanted to write to congratulate you and your choir on their stunning contribution to Matins this morning. It is so refreshing to see such a young choir sing with such obvious skill and passion. When a visiting choir comes to sing, we usually end up with Stanford in Bb or Ireland in F or one of the Britten settings but, lovely as they are, we hear them regularly with our own choir. It was a delight to have a visiting choir bring something different, and you are to be commended on understanding what a visiting choir can bring to an institution with regular choral worship. Visiting your website I was staggered to see all that you achieve, and hope that your new Vicar nurtures, protects and develops the wonderful tradition that is clearly alive and well in Northampton. Once again, many, many thanks.

The next Cathedral visit for the choirs is a two-day residency at York Minster on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June, and later in the year the choirs sing at Ely Cathedral (in a concert performance of Berlioz’s Te Deum), Gloucester Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral and the Chapel of King’s College Cambridge.
