Our New Parish Priest
30th April 2012

On Saturday the Reverend Dr David McConkey was installed and licensed as Parish Priest of All Saints with St Katharine and St Peter, Northampton. At the service, which was attended by nearly four hundred people, the combined choirs of Boys, Girls and Men, were joined by members of the All Saints’ Singers, Northampton Bach Choir and Northampton Philharmonic Choir to sing Sir C. Hubert H. Parry’s I was glad, ably accompanied by former

Organ Scholar, Richard Pinel, who is Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The Boys, Girls and Men also performed Jack Ossewaarde’s Draw us in the spirit’s tether and Haydn’s Te Deum in C (Empress Marie Thérèse). The service concluded with a stirring rendition of Blessèd John Henry Newman’s great hymn Firmly I believe, and truly, set to the tune 'Nashotah House' which includes the stirring refrain, sung in Latin:

'Sanctus fortis, Sanctus Deus,
De profundis oro te.
Miserere, Judex meus,
Parce mihi, Domine.'

The Parish Priest was welcomed by the Bishops of Peterborough, Richborough and Ebbsfleet, the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese, Lindsay Urwin, the Archdeacon of Northampton and the Canon Missioner of Peterborough Cathedral, as well as by members of the local Christian Community – from the Parish Priest of neighbouring Parish St Giles, to the local Baptist and Methodist Ministers, the Dean of the Roman Catholic Cathedral, and the

Parish Priest of St Anne’s Orthodox Community. He was also welcomed by the Mayor of Northampton, the Chairman of Northamptonshire County Council – we have a formal prayer for the Borough and County Councils as part of the statutory prayers at Evensong which is said or sung daily – the High Sheriff and Lord Lieutenant.

On Sunday the Parish Priest celebrated Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer at 8:00am and High Mass at 10:30am when the Boys and Men sang Mozart’s Coronation Mass (plaudits to Beckett and Sargeant Scholar Fenton for his stunning rendition of the Agnus Dei) and Schubert’s setting of Psalm 23. Presentations were made by the congregation after each of these services, and a Parish Luncheon held for sixty people during the

afternoon. The day ended with Choral Evensong and Benediction of the Blessèd Sacrament sung by the Girls’ Choir who presented music from their CD Notre Père which was launched after the service. We were delighted to welcome Richard McVeigh, former Assistant Organist of Winchester Cathedral, to accompany our services on this day, as our Assistant Organist, Roger Palmer, recovers from heart surgery.
