A Song of Malcolm Archer
12th May 2012

Today just over fifty members of our choirs joined forty singers from choirs all over the Diocese to sing in a workshop led by Malcolm Archer, Director of Music at Winchester College. Mr Archer led the singers in rehearsal through his anthems including At the round earth’s imagined corners, God in such love for us, In war resolution and Sing we merrily, and later performed a selection in a short service at St Matthew’s Church. During the service Mr Archer presented our Senior Lay Clerk, Geoff Hasler, with a medal on behalf of the Royal School of Church

Music to mark his seventy years’ service here at All Saints. In 2002 Mr Archer composed an anthem O where can I go from your spirit for Geoff’s sixtieth anniversary in the choir, and since then he composed perhaps his most famous work for us, Missa Omnes Sancti, which has received no fewer than three professional recordings (including our own on the CD Omnes Sancti) and performances on four continents.

We are delighted to announce that we have commissioned a new anthem from Mr Archer to mark Geoff’s milestone – O sing unto the Lord a new song. The work begins with the verses from Psalm 149 (O sing unto the Lord a new song: let the congregation of saints praise him) which reflect his service to All Saints, and his relish of new repertoire, the middle section sets John 4. 24 (God is a spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth) which, in

its setting by Sterndale Bennett, is one of Geoff’s favourites from his early years with All Saints, and the work concludes with a reprise and development of the opening material, this time setting 1 Corinthians 14. 15 (I will sing with the spirit, and the understanding also, Alleluia) – the motto of the Royal School of Church Music, and a text engraved on every church chorister’s heart. We are grateful to members of the choir and congregation, and former choristers, choral and organ scholars and lay clerks, for supporting the commissioning of this work.

The anthem will receive its first performance at Choral Evensong on Sunday 15 July, and is to be published by the Royal School of Church Music. Malcolm Archer will be joined by his former pupil David Bednall to give a recital of organ duets and improvisations (both solo and duet!) on Thursday 19 July at 1:10pm at All Saints. Don’t miss either of these events!
