O Sing unto the Lord a New Song!
15th July 2012

On 15th July the boys and men gave the world premiere of their 2012 commission from Malcolm Archer, dedicated to Mr Geoff Hasler, our Senior Lay Clerk. Mr Hasler, pictured above with his wife Pamela, has achieved the most astonishing feat of seventy unbroken years of singing in the Choir of All Saints Church, man and boy! To mark this fantastic achievement, a number of Geoff’s friends and family clubbed together to contribute “A tenner for a Tenor”, and so a second anthem from Mr Archer was commissioned, the first in 2002, O Where can I go from your spirit, to mark sixty years’ service. Geoff’s dedication to All Saints extends far beyond the Choir: he is frequently to be found putting his carpentry skills to good use in and around the Church, and indeed Geoff built all the shelving in the Music Library, the Director’s music stand (adapted over the years to reflect the whims and preferences of generations of Directors!), and the wardrobes for the cassocks.

The text for this second was carefully chosen to reflect Geoff and his long history with the Choirs: the anthem opens with a rousing setting of verses from Cantate Domino, Psalm 149. The central section of the anthem sets words familiar from a setting by William Sterndale Bennett, one of Geoff’s favourite works from his days as a treble, and thus this section opens with trebls alone: “God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” The final section of the work reflects Geoff’s involvement with the RSCM, with whom he was heavily involved from 1952 until the late 1970s, hence the RSCM motto at the end: “I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Alleluia!”

It was a particular pleasure that a large number of Geoff’s friends were able to join us for the first performance, and a glass was raised in Geoff’s honour as all came to celebrate this incredible achievement.
