Heritage Open Days
9th September 2012

Over the past four days All Saints has seen record numbers of visitors, in connection with Northampton Heritage Open Days. Our events began on Thursday when the Director of Music, Lee Dunleavy, gave a recital of music by Henry Purcell – a composer contemporary with the building of this church – as the first of the monthly organ recitals held on the first Thursday of each month at 1:10pm. As always the video screen projector was in operation, and the recital concluded with an audience favourite – a transcription of Purcell’s Chacony in G minor, Z 730, which begins on the quietest stops on the chancel organ, and concludes with both organs in all their thrilling glory. The next recital, of English organ music, is on Thursday 4 October at 1:10pm. Admission to the recitals is free, with a retiring collection.

On Saturday the choirs lead no less than three choral services. At 10:00am the Boys and Men lead a Civic service of Choral Matins, with the Mayor and Corporation, and representatives of the County Council present. The Te Deum laudamus was sung to the setting in C by Franz Joseph Haydn, and organist Ben Horden performed Guilmant’s March on a theme by Handel “Lift up your heads” and Bach’s Præludium et Fuga pro Organo pleno (commonly known as ‘St Anne’) by J. S. Bach. At 12:30pm the All Saints’ Singers led the Sung Mass, which included a performance of Sir Malcolm Arnold’s setting of verses of John Clare’s poem, A Song of Praise (which has recently been recorded by the Northampton Bach Choir, under the direction of Lee Dunleavy). The day concluded with “A Northamptonshire Hymn Festival” which included eight hymns with music or words by Northamptonshire authors, and we welcomed representative from a number of Churches from different denominations to read the Lessons. You can see the Order of Service for the Hymn Festival here.

Today, the choir of Boys and Men began with Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and in the evening they sang Choral Evensong at St Peter’s Church, Marefair, where the Parish Priest, the Reverend Dr David McConkey, gave a most inspiring Sermon to a packed church on the theme of Heritage and Renewal.
