Boy Bishop Installed
12th December 2012

On the Eve of Saint Nicholas’s Day, Wednesday 5 December, one of the Boy Choristers was installed and enthroned as Boy Bishop. This was a custom very widespread in the Middle Ages, whereby a boy was chosen, for example among choristers, to parody the real Bishop. In England the boy bishop was elected on the feast of Saint Nicholas, the patron of children. The real Bishop would, symbolically, step down at the verse “he hath put down the mighty from their seat” during the Magnificat and the boy would take his seat at the verse “and hath exalted the humble and meek”. Here the Boy Bishop was been chosen based on his ability to read from the Authorised Version of the Bible – something which all our choristers do on a daily basis at All Saints – and on his general leadership skills. We offer our congratulations to the boy chosen this year, Bill.

Normally our weekday Evensong services attract only a small number of faithful and chorister parents, but on this occasion there were nearly one hundred souls braving the cold. During the Magnificat the Bishop Bill was robed with the Cope, Mitre and Crozier, and he proceeded to read the Lesson from the New Testament; at its conclusion, and whilst the choristers sang the Nunc Dimittis to the setting written for the choirs in 2008 by Barry Ferguson, he was installed in his throne. He led the recitation of the Creed, the Prayers and the Blessing, and took his rightful place in the Procession at the end of the service. In addition to Ferguson’s All Saints’ Service, the choristers sang the Responses to the setting written for them earlier this year by Ronald Watson, and sang the anthem O Jesus, blessed Lord, composed in 2011 for our Boys’ Choir.
